American Dichotomy: NFL and Physical Assault

Patriots and Bills game. Concussion from the result of an illegal hit.

Football is a sport that makes for physical assault exclusive in it's arena. Nothing really you can do to repress or change that. You can fix the punishment though. You can see what 5 game suspensions do to your ratings versus a mere 1 or 2 games plus a huge fine. But lets keep in mind here; we're dealing with something similar to a mafia that hungers for violence, and in order for them to sustain their business, they have to weigh in the worth of this entertainment.
The problem is the NFL's commissioning and how it handles the punishment for the illegality of an assault on the field and separating that from the game itself. The Deflategate scandal, for instance, was a different, non-violent case that involved a possible ‘bending of the rules’ from a franchise that had credibility for winning football games. We can continue that narrative from scandal dubbed “Spygate” back in ‘08 and make for a good headline story. We can track deflated footballs and who deflated them through text messaging, but we have a challenging time tracking ‘preponderance’ of physical violence.
11 deflated footballs. 11 illegal or legal hits. And, this can become a huge hit in the market place of ideas. The headline with the face of this league at risk of losing his credibility over this. It’s business. It’s entertainment. Deal.
